Caboto couldn't lose.

Updated: Sep 14, 2021

Caboto Soccer was in a no-lose situation Sunday during the Ontario Cup final at Soccer Centre Stadium in Vaughan.

The U16 Strikers Blue team squared off against the U16 Gold team for bragging rights.

"The first half of the game was tight" said Blue head coach Egidio Mosca. "We got a corner kick goal by Lauren Fitzpatrick and that loosened the team up to be more creative"

Alessia Olivito scored from 17 yards out to make it 2-nil at halftime.

Gold made a second half push. ""We tried different things to try and break their defensive back four but just weren't able to break through" said Gold head coach Joe Barile.

Ava Sirola and Kendra Bell put the game out of reach for Blue as Erica Battagello recorded the clean sheet. Blue won 4-0.

In a moment rarely seen in sports both the winning and losing team gathered for a team photo before heading home.

"As a club president seeing your two teams get there was special and historical" said Mosca. "That picture means pride in what we've done and represents a wonderful memory for all the players".

Barile was proud of his team. "Great effort. Great experience for them to be on that stage. They'll have memories for life."

"Another great resource for local sports produced by a person that has been invested in local sports for decades."

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
