Saints softball opens with four wins

Updated: Sep 13, 2022

The St. Clair softball team showed no mercy during their opening weekend of play scoring 54 runs in four wins. Saints started the season Saturday in Hamilton with a 12-2win over Mohawk and followed up with a 17-2 victory over Conestoga.

"The team is playing really good." said head coach Doug Wiseman whose team returned home for their home opener Sunday morning against Lambton and posted a 14-0 shutout.

"We're getting everybody in which is nice. We're getting contributions from one through sixteen. We're focused." said Wiseman whose team is hosting the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association national championship tournament in early October.

Rya Cowan and Mckenna Copley combined for a 2-hit shutout. Sierra Baltzer smacked a 2-run homer in the 5th.

St. Clair followed that up in the afternoon blanking Fanshawe 11-0. Rookie Mekenna Copley of Dover Centre, Ontario pitched a 2-hitter and has spent more time on the mound than she anticipated heading into the season. "I love the opportunity I've been given." said Copley.

The 18-year old, who won four provincial medals with the Chatham Golden Eagles, is excited about playing on a strong team that has her back. "Especially as a pitcher, you have a defence that's amazing behind you. An outfielder (Sierra Baltzer), nothing drops. It's just amazing."

The Saints have six road games over the next two weekends before returning home to host the defending league champions from Durham on September 25th.

"Another great resource for local sports produced by a person that has been invested in local sports for decades."

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
