Eric Wellwood won't be the new head coach of the Windsor Spitfires after accepting the lead role with the Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL. The 31-year old is the new bench boss of the Toronto Maple Leafs affiliate.

Wellwood makes the move after spending three years on the bench in Flint of the OHL. Wellwood led the Firebirds to a 40-21-1-1 record during the shortened 2019-20 season. Before that he was an assistant coach under DJ Smith who led the Oshawa Generals to the Memorial Cup title in 2015.

A 6th round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2009, Wellwood played 31 regular season games before suffering a career ending injury.

Wellwood was part of back to back Memorial Cup championships with the Windsor Spitfires in 2009 and 2010.
