Hage and McCann Beach Volleyball national champs

"It feels so good to win the finals of the gold medal match. It was like all the hard work we put in all season, finally led to the result we were hoping for." Hannah Hage.

Hannah Hage and Makenna McCann beat the team of Cheong/Crifo to win gold in the 14U division at the recent Youth Beach Nationals in Toronto. "The gold medal match was a very tough match as we met the provincial gold medal team in the finals." said McCann who trains at On Point Athletics Beach Volleyball in Windsor with Hage.

Hannah and Makenna intertionally played in a few Toronto OVA tournaments earlier this season to gain experience for moments like this. "The competition was so tough and we played alongside some really amazing beach athletes who wanted a top spot as much as we did. We played some solid volleyball and it was so good." McCann said.

The girls battled through a tough first set before pulling out a 23-21 win. "That helped give us the momentum we needed to win the second set." said Hage as they went on to win the second set 21-11.

Hannah and Makenna both enter grade nine in September. Hanna is heading to Holy Names while Makenna becomes a Wildcat at Villanova. Both play indoor with South County Volleyball and hope to represent their high school's on the court as well.

"I felt super proud of Hannah and I, but I also felt very proud to be representing Windsor/Essex County and On Point on that podium. Honestly, winning a national championship makes me want to push hard and see what else lies ahead for us." said Mc Cann.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
