Saints open strong

A pair of convincing wins at home Saturday to open the season for the St. Clair Softball team.

The defending OCAA and CCSA champions opened the 2023 season with dominating wins over Lambton College and Conestoga. The Saints started the day scoring nine runs in the first inning and added seven in the second in a 16-0 win over the Lions before closing out the Candors 10-0. "It was an awesome display of how we came together as a team in practice and now it shows in the game how powerful we can be as a group." said 2nd year pitcher/infielder Bryanna Kressler who went 5-7 at the plate on the day with 4 RBI's.

She pitched two innings against Conestoga mowing down 5-of-6 batters. She took away the drop ball pitch from her repertoire during the off-season which she fells helped her. "I just thought my other pitches deserved more attention. Drop ball wasn't my best pitch. I'm gonna be honest about that.

Shae-Lyn Murphy went 5-8 Saturday and scored five runs who felt anxious heading into the opener. "We haven't played as a full team together but it was nice to kinda get back in the groove of what we had last year." Murphy said.

Between games the Saints celebrated last year's success and received their championship rings. "It was rewarding." said head coach Doug Wiseman. "I think they did it right by waiting for opening day and we had our three players that graduated with us were here today too so that was nice. Very proud time for us.

The Saints travel to Toronto and will stay overnight before taking on the Humber Hawks Sunday.
