WEST swimmers showing well at Eastern Championships

14-year old Michael Church swam the 100m backstroke in 1:04:53 at the Eastern Championships in Quebec Thursday to qualify for the Canadian Junior Championships this July in Toronto.

Church is one of five WEST swimmers at Easterns along with Riley Carswell, Harry Wei, Lucas Safta and Avery Momotiuk.

Carswell, 16, also had a good start placing 4th in the youth 1500m Freestyle. Safta finished 9th in the 200 Breaststroke in the Sr. A Final.

On Friday, Carswell clocked in at 54.98 in the prelims of the 100m Freestyle. He improved to 54.72 tonight to finish third in the B Final. He is also in contention for a medal in the youth 800m Freestyle.

Since winning the Team Showdown team event in Brantford in December, WEST has been working hard to ride the wave of success in the second half of the season. "This championship that WEST won together is a testament to the hard work that the athletes have done together in practice as a team," said head coach Jimmy Lee. "It shows the progress in the development of the team as well as showcasing their team spirit and team cohesion in winning this championship."

The Eastern Championships continue through Sunday.
