Byrne takes another swing at golf

After hanging out playing golf with Misfits a few years ago David Byrne was hit with a sudden realization. The Essex native was shooting low 60's with the Windsor group and thought, "hey, maybe I'm still good at this".

Byrne had posted a 62 at Beach Grove, 61 at Essex, 63 at Ambassador and Pointe West. "You can't really shoot those numbers and feel comfortable sitting at home".

The 33-year old wanted to find a way back into the game. He got his feet wet in 2019 playing some events, "and did ok". Last year during the pandemic PGA Tour Canada held four events and Byrne made all of the cuts and "got the competitive juices back.".

The former Big Break winner just finished an 8-week journey with PGA Tour Canada trying to create a second big break.

He started the trip single but got engaged along the way to his girlfriend Zoe Bennett. "It was nice to chase my dream again (may have found a new caddy also" said Byrne in a Facebook post.

During our time together Byrne told the story of how hanging out with celebrities he was fortunate to rub shoulders with while living in Los Angeles a few years back helped him appreciate the essence of the game.

Hear who those famous celebs are and what they unsuspectingly gave the impressionable golfer in this video brought to you by Unifor Local 444.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
