Eighteen teams from across the region converged on Co-An Park in McGregor for opening day of the WECSSAA girls softball season. "A lot of girls out here having a good time. Weather is perfect," said Brennan coach Jim Kitl whose team won a game. "Which is nice because half the hockey players I have with me who went through a winless season so we got our first W today.

Hailey Munro liked the atmosphere with all teams in the city and county divisions at the same part at the same time. "It's definitely more fun because say you play out of school (travel/club) you get to see you're other teammates and it's just more fun like that. You get to see what's going on with other teams."

Donald Lebel, head coach at L'Essor feels the festival style day was good for his players. "C'est extraordinaire qu'on puisse joue comme ca," Labelle said in french. "On a un tres bonne esprit d'equipe et cette annee Lajeunesse est aussi la et on a une confrontation Mardi prochain 3:30. C'est bien."

The Kingsville Comets won both of their games today as they hope to return to OFSAA for a second straight season. "We got second at OFSAA last year so hopefully we can have another good season." said outfielder Natalie Mann.

Shortstop Addison Dyck liked the way her team played on opening day. "There's obviously some places we can improve on but we played really well," Dyck said. "It would be nice to go back (to OFSAA) but there's a lot of great competition here so you never know what happens. It was a close game with Leamington last year so we have to focus on getting out of WECSSAA first before we can think about OFSAA."

I took a lot of shots. Here's the pic gallery. Enjoy.

"Another great resource for local sports produced by a person that has been invested in local sports for decades."

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
