Hurtubise shines: one shot shy of victory and two feet from course record

Windsor, ON — Tyler Hurtubise saved his best for last at the Lancer Invitational, lighting up Ambassador Golf Club with a second-round 61 to finish tied for second overall.

After opening the tournament with a 75, the Windsor Lancer caught fire on the final day, carding a 14-stroke improvement that put him in a tie with Laurier’s Matt Whitehead at 136. Dayton Price edged out the field with a final-round 63 to win the event at 135.

Hurtubise nearly made history on the final hole. With a 30-foot putt on Hole #1, he came just two feet short of tying the course record of 60.

“I was gonna chip it. Ended up putting,” Hurtubise told Powerplay Sports. “It bobbled on me. Ended up being short. Obviously it's a 30-footer. Not gonna make those every time, but certainly wanted to.”

Despite the near miss, Hurtubise was thrilled with his performance and the chance to compete again.

“I like to have fun on the golf course, and today I did just that,” said the 22-year-old, who recently returned home for teacher’s college after completing his business degree at Wayne State University.

“My last round at Wayne, it was actually emotional. My last two holes there were tears coming to my eyes. This is nice. I get to get back in the competitive flow. Super fun.”

Hurtubise is expected to play a key role in Windsor’s push to defend their OUA title when the provincial championships begin October 17 in Oshawa.

Alek Mauro (69-68) placed third with a two-day total of 137. Kennedy Fremlin shot a 73 Sunday and placed 2nd overall on the women's side with a total of 147, one shot behind the Laurier's Kristi Godkin. The Lancer women finished 2nd overall while the men's landed in third.

"I am pleased with the way both of our teams played this weekend." said Windsor head coach Adam Wagner. "I think this was a good tune up for OUA's in a couple of weeks and was a good measuring stick to see who we match up against the rest of the teams."
