Lancers Aim To Reset At Home

Although the Windsor Lancers dropped their season opener on the road against Laurier, head coach J-P Circelli and his squad are far from discouraged.

“There was a lot of positive energy offensively — and at times we may have struggled with that a year ago,” Circelli told Powerplay Sports. “There’s a lot of new moving pieces, but I definitely saw positives with the new players in there. There are things they can do offensively.”

The Lancers showed flashes across all three phases, with Circelli also praising the effort from new faces on defense and special teams.

While there’s no shortage of areas to improve, Circelli feels execution will be important heading into a critical Week 2 matchup against the Guelph Gryphons.

"It really comes down to execution. It's not something where I'm disappointed in the effort. Disappointed in the, hey why don't we execute this? Why couldn't we make this throw? Why couldn't we make this block, this tacke? Because it really comes down to those fundamentals. Blocking, tackling, throwing, catching. We're just a little bit off on those so that's something to build with."

With a shortened 8-game OUA schedule, there’s little room to stumble early — and Circelli knows the stakes.

“They didn’t want to start 0-2. They definitely don’t want to be 0-3 — and we don’t want to be 0-2,” Circelli noted. “We’re probably going to get each other’s best, and it’ll be a very challenging game.”

Kickoff is set for 7pm Saturday night at Alumni Field, where the Lancers will look to get back on track — and make a statement in front of their home crowd.

I was at the game and have been across the province to attend games. No other school conducts themselves as poorly as Windsor. The heckling and poor sportsmanship on the part of the non dressed players in the stands was shameful.
