Lancers win home opener vs Guelph

Defence was smash mouth and the offence did enough to help the Windsor Lancers beat Guelph 14-12 in their home opener Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

Both teams put up two field goals each and the Lancers added a rouge for a 7-6 halftime lead.

Windsor quarterback Sam Girard found veteran wide receiver Alex Bornais for the winning strike in the third quarter. The defence, which was solid throughout the game, stymied the Gryphons as the Lancers went on to record their first win since opening day in 2019.

Guelph was riding a high coming into the game having beaten perennial powerhouse Western 23-21 last weekend.
