Pollard leads Saints over Alberta champs

Flat out. The St. Clair men's soccer team was strong. They were tough on 50-50 balls. Tough on their pursuit and the Saints were aggressive. "We didn't win our conference. A lot of people think we don't deserve to be here and that's what tonight was about. Making a statement." said captain Massimo Pollard who scored a pair of goals as St. Clair beat Keyano College 3-1. "We deserve to be here just as much as anybody else."

Pollard opened the scoring in the first two minutes of the game. The Huskies got one back on a penalty kick by William Ly midway through the half.

That's the way it stayed until Tanner Page took off down the wing breaking away from a defender, slide it out front to a sliding Moussa Nizam who found the back of the net for what turned out to be the game winner with 15 minutes left. "That goal would never happen if he didn't make that run." Said Nizam. "He just beat all the defenders down the wing and cut back pass. It wasn't the best of shots, a little deflection, but I'll take it. Helped out the team. That's all I care about."

Pollard closed out the scoring on a play that was similar to the second goal. This time it was Zain Nizam shaking off defenders down the wing and cutting a pass out front to Pollard who blasted home the final goal of the game from 11 yards out. "This week at practice I wish could be like every week." Pollard said. "We really put in the work this week. Everyone wanted to prove to everyone that didn't think we didn't deserve to be here belong that we do so we put that into training and that into today's game.

St. Clair will now face the B.C. champs from Douglas College in the CCAA semi-finals Thursday afternoon at 5:30.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
