Saints own first place

Updated: Jan 19, 2020

The St. Clair men's basketball team took sole possession of first place in the OCAA's West Division with a 85-75 win over Fanshawe Friday night at the Sportsplex. The atmosphere was energized as both teams went into the contest with identical 9-2 records. The Saints led from start to finish and built up a 17-point advantage in the second quarter. Fanshawe outrebounded St. Clair 56-24 and put their size advantage to work. The Falcons chipped the deficit to six with over three minutes left in the game.

Following a timeout a Saints player screamed "we need a bucket, we need a bucket" from the bench. They didn't get it on that possession but David Gomez Jr. went to work on the next one and helped the Saints pull away.

Gomez Jr. led St. Clair with 31 points going 10-10 from the charity stripe. Daelyn Davis and Darnelle Peddie each had 12 for the Saints. Alfred Johnson led Fanshawe with 35 points and 10 rebounds.

St. Clair heads to Mohawk Saturday to take on a Mountaineers team riding a six-game winning streak.

"Another great resource for local sports produced by a person that has been invested in local sports for decades."

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
