Sandwich Standout Leah Shannon commits to Windsor Lancers

It’s official — Leah Shannon, a standout multi-sport athlete from Sandwich Secondary School, is taking her talents to the next level with the University of Windsor’s Lady Lancers basketball program.

For Leah, this is more than just a signing — it’s a dream come true. “Playing basketball at the university level has always been a goal of mine,” Shannon told Powerplay Sports. “Doing it at home makes it even more special. Having my family, friends, and community here to support me means a lot.”

Leah has long had her eyes on the Lancers program. “I chose Windsor because it’s home. I’ve always looked up to the Lancers, and the coaching staff and culture really stood out to me,” she explains. “I know Windsor is the right place for me to grow as both a player and a person.”

That growth started years ago. Since Grade 9, Leah has trained with Lancers head coach Chantel Vallée and her players, building connections that will make the transition feel natural.

“Bonds were made throughout the years — it already feels like family.”

On the court and in the classroom, The 17-year old is focused on finishing strong in her final year at Sandwich. “I want to help lead my team, set an example for the younger players, and keep preparing myself for the jump to the next level,” she says. “My goal is to bring attention to the basketball program at Sandwich and make it better — I hope to impact the future of Sandwich Basketball.”

Leah’s résumé speaks for itself. She’s been playing competitive basketball since she was 8, suiting up for programs like the Windsor Valiants, Tecumseh Saints, and Michigan Prospects.

A true all-around athlete, she’s represented Sandwich at OFSAA track (3 years), OFSAA cross country (2 years), and also competed in hockey, soccer, volleyball, and ultimate frisbee — all while earning Athlete of the Year honors twice and Student-Athlete of the Year this past season.

We look forward to watching Leah play and will check in with the Sabres when play begins this fall.
