Jacob Savoni led the Lancers to a season opening 34-17 over the York Lions at Alumni Field Sunday night but he is praising his teammates for his success. The third-year running back chalked up 179 yards on 14 carries and found the endzone three times earning him the OUA offensive player of the week honours. Savoni scored the game's first touchdown in the first quarter giving the Lancers a 7-2 lead but his biggest moment came in the 4th when he broke through the line and scampered for an 86-year score.
Carson Ouellette made his presence known during his debut in blue and gold. After spending four years at Laurier the Holy Names grad provided a highlight reel leap over a York defender during a second quarter punt return and racked up 245 all-purpose yards. Quarterback Sam Girard went 18 of 34 for 192 yards and one interception.
Savoni and Ouellette are the Lancers athletes of the week.
