The St. Clair basketball teams are 2-0 after a strong weekend on the hardcourt. The Saints were missing Jana Kucera, the defending OCAA scoring champ, and sharp-shooter Anna Ulicny to injuries but Logan Kucera stepped up in their absence. The third-year guard scored a game-high 33 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Saints to a 78-51 win over Niagara Saturday afternoon. St. Clair beat Mohawk Friday night.
A day after beating Mohawk 93-85, the St. Clair men's basketball team gutted out an 83-65 win against Niagara. The Saints came out flying against the Knights Saturday afternoon and raced out to a 32-12 lead after the first quarter. Niagara cut their deficit to two points in the third quarter. Kennedy grad Glynn Willis-Paris found Jerry Mercury cutting under the basket with 5:09 left in the quarter and threaded a nice pass for easy two points as the Saints never looked back. Husam Shallo led St. Clair with 20 points on 5/9 shooting from downtown.
The women's softball team returned home from London to cheer on the men's team. The Saints brought home a bronze medal from the provincial championships. Down 3-0 to Durham in the semi-final game St. Clair scored back with in the 7th and final inning but could not get the equalizer. Durham advanced and lost to the eventual champs from Humber.
The bronze medal capped off a turnaround season for the Saints. The women started the season losing their first four games before rebounding to finish 15-9 and third in the OCAA.
