Vagnini begins to build program

Three members of the L'Essor soccer team are the first building blocks of Steve Vagnini's program. Sydnie Lucier, Angelica Petro and Airika Natyshak recently helped Les Aigles finish 4th in the province at the OFSAA AA championships.

"Strong three. Two good midfielders. One big defender and we're continuing." said Vagnini who recently took over the head coaching position.

Since taking the reigns Vagnini has invited teams from across the area to the college for workouts and to see what is being offered. "I'm amazed as a coach at what we have. Can you imagine as a player?.

During Vagnini's first stint as head coach the team was playing on a grass field. "If I was to look back when I was that age and walked out of that stadium, that's a professional atmosphere."

Vagnini is helping rebuild a program that graduated a majority of its players. The key returning players are all star keeper Athena Dimario-Done along with veteran defender Jaclyn French and forward Malary Cole.

The St. Clair women’s outdoor team finished 2nd in the West Division this past season and lost a heartbreaker in overtime in the provincial quarterfinals. The women's indoor team ended up winning OCAA bronze during the winter semester.

"Another great resource for local sports produced by a person that has been invested in local sports for decades."

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
