Baylis helps Sabres win in return to the pitch

Thandiwe Baylis scored the lone goal as Sandwich got their first win of the young sr. girls soccer season Tuesday afternoon 1-0 over St. Joe's in LaSalle. "This game we came together, worked hard at practice and we really went out there and showed them what we have."

Baylis (on the right) celebrates win.

It was a much needed rebound game after losing to 8-0 to Holy Names during last week's opener. "It felt really good. We played well. First one was really rough." said Sabres backstopper Carissa Hann. "I think it gives us a lot of confidence. We played good as a team."

The Lasers were playing their first game after a pre-season that included an indoor tournament where they played well and went deep. "I think we just needed to spread out more and take our time with our passes and shots," said right-side midfielder Kylie Lesperance who was encouraged despite the opening day loss.

For Baylis, this season signals a return to the pitch in her grade 11 year after taking last season off to focus on track. "It was just calling my name I guess," Baylis said. "I loved the experience in grade 9. I was kinda sad I didn't do it in grade 10 so it's just really nice to with the girls."

Baylis, who ran the 3000m, 1500m and 800 in her first year, is looking to balance both sports like she did two years ago and add the 4x400m relay to her list. She qualified for OFSAA in the 1500m last spring.

Sandwich is at Villanova Monday. St. Joe's will practice Wednesday before hosting St. Anne Thursday.

"Another great resource for local sports produced by a person that has been invested in local sports for decades."

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
