Windsor, ON – There was a lot of drama during the championship round at the 97th edition of the Essex Kent Junior Golf Tournament.

Riley Bentley captured the Senior Boys Division title after defeating Andrew Baker in a tense 2-hole playoff at the historic Roseland Golf Club—a classic layout designed by renowned golf architect Donald Ross.
"It felt amazing," Bentley told Powerplay Sports. "To have my name on the Essex Kent trophy with guys like Bob Panasiuk and Richard Scott is such an honour. This was my last year to play, so it meant a lot to get it done. Baker is a great player and pushed me but I was able to finish it off."
Bentley, who had finished 66th on the Unico Primo Junior Golf Tour, delivered a clutch performance against Baker, who was crowned tour champ last week.
After a par on the first playoff hole, the St. Joe's student could sense he was gaining momentum heading into number one at Roseland. Baker's tee went down the middle while Bentley's was to the left. Baker came up short on his approach while Bentley landed on the front edge of the green. "He hit his chip to about six feet, but I was able to roll mine up close for a tap-in par. When his putt slid by I knew it was over."
The victory capped off an exciting summer that saw the 16-year old play in all major Golf Ontario events, The Canadian Junior's out in New Brunswick and down south for the Optimist World Championships at Trump National Doral.
"I've gained a lot of experience competing against strong fields," said the reigning SWOSSA champ who credits his parents and coach Chris Wilson for his success this season. "Winning the Essex Kent was the perfect way to cap off a great summer. I still have a couople more events left, and then it'll be time to switch gears for high school golf season."
The prestigious EK tournament drew 220 junior golfers from across the region, with the three-day match play format providing thrilling action across multiple age divisions. A significant effort by sponsors, donors, and volunteers ensured that all participants were able to compete at no cost, continuing a proud tradition of community support for junior golf.
In the Novice Division, JJ Willis emerged victorious 2-up with one to go, capping off a steady and composed performance throughout the week. In the Tyke Division, Jace Maytham dominated his final match, winning 3-up with one to go and showcasing impressive control and consistency.
With nearly a century of history behind it, the Essex Kent Junior Golf Tournament remains a cornerstone event in Ontario junior golf, offering young players a unique opportunity to test their skills on one of Canada’s most storied courses.
