Bowler's gamble pays off as Spellacy commits

When Windsor Spitfires general manager Bill Bowler introduced us to A.J. Spellacy in early May following the draft he said, "Hoping he becomes a Spitfire."

The hope is now a reality as Ohio born Spellacy has officially committed to the team. "He's an elite American born hockey player who had options." said Bowler.

Chosen in the third round of the OHL draft in April Spellacy visited the WFCU Centre during the playoffs. The 6'3 forward has been playing hockey and football, where he had scholarship opportunities.

The wideout and free safety was rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports, who noted that Spellacy received an offer from Illinois State May 3rd and Iowa State the next day. Check out his highlight reel here.

However, he seemed focused on coming to Windsor and becoming a Spitfire when we caught up with him during game 6 of the first round against Sarnia on May 1st. "It just feels like I'm a hockey player."

Bowler tells Powerplay Sports, "AJ joining our organization is a great signing for the Spits" said Bowler.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
