CCH making comeback after winless season

Catholic Central didn't win a game last season going 0-16. They opened the 2023-24 season with a convincing 53-37 win over L'Essor. "Last year was a terrible season. We lost all of our games. There's a big difference from this season and last season" said CCH guard Odilon Kougnami, who led all scorers with 15 points.

The Comets started the season at the Freed's Tip Off Classic last weekend where they finished 3rd. "Everybody is really hard working." said rookie guard Taj Nalls. "Everybody wants to win and they're driven and I like playing with teammates like that..

Nalls looked comfortable on the court and didn't show his age. "I really have to adjust getting my shot off quicker. Making contact with my layups. I have to change the way I train but it's a really good change. I like it.

There's a lot to like about the Comets and their new captain, Kougnami. The grade 12 showed some flash during their win against Les Aigles but was also a leader on the court when the younger players were too excitable.

He was an all-star last year and was named MVP at the all-star game. He has elevated his game this season. "I'm for sure going for the Mr. Basketball title (as AA league MVP). This year I'm trying to be a role model. I want to be able to get the team together when things aren't working."

He would also like to see his team excel and make some noise this season. "This year we're trying to make a difference. Go to WECSSAA, OFSAA. Try to go far this year."

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
