St. Clair to host national golf championships

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association is bringing their national championships to Ambassador Golf as St. Clair welcomes the best from October 11-15th. "We're very excited to host the top collegiate golfers from across the country" said Athletic Coordinator Jay Shewfelt.

St. Clair was slated to host the 2020 edition but the pandemic cut short that excitement. Teams will be coming from three provinces: Ontario, Alberta and Quebec. Shewfelt feels the tournament is "going to be a great experience for our players on a course they are familiar with".

The college previously hosted the tournament in 2005 and 2009. The Saints last hosted a national championship five years ago at the Sportsplex when Humber won the women's basketball title.

About 60 players will descend on Ambassador Golf which played host to Golf Ontario's Canadian Men's Amateur Championships last month. "We're happy to showcase Windsor and Essex County once again." said Shewfelt.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
