Stars lead Saints into provincial tournament

Prior to the season Doug Wiseman knew his St. Clair softball team was going to be good, real good. The Saints have lived up to the billing finishing the regular season with a perfect 24-0 record. St. Clair also won the CCSA national championship beating Western 9-0.

That is the only blemish on the Mustangs' overall record this season. Western is 22-1.

"It's been very gratifying." said Wiseman as the team gets set to open the OCAA championship tournament Friday in London against the Falcons. "The hard work has paid off."

The journey started in July with team workouts. "Our goal was to keep getting better and we have."

It's been a magical ride that saw the Saints sweep most of the accolades at the tournament banquet including five first-team all stars.

"My message to the team is embrace what we've done and embrace the moment we're in right now."

St. Clair has a shot at redemption this weekend after a heartbreaking loss in the final a year ago to Durham on their brand-new turf field.

"We're ready. We practiced a couple hours today, went for a team dinner. We'll get a good workout in tomorrow before the game and be ready to go."

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
