Cardinals turn chirps into fuel

The Brennan sr. girls basketball team had a plastic gas can and hard hat at the end of their bench Monday during their game against Cardinal Carter. The hard hat is given to the player of the game. The gas can was a curiousity for onlookers. "The can is our Cardinal fuel." said Shay Crooker. "We use it to motivate ourselves to work harder and even though some people, even our school, they tell us we're bad we use it against them and use it as our fuel to do better."

The Cardinals did well with a short bench Monday pulling out a 50-36 win over Cardinal Carter. Crooker scored 13 points as Brennan improved to 2-3 on the season. "It was really good. We worked together as a team. We came back together because we usually crumble and this time we didn't even though we have seven people today."

It's a busy week for the Cardinals who host the (2-2) Academie Ste Cecile Esprit Tuesday before facing the first-place Leamington Lions on the road Thursday. The Esprit handed the Lions their first loss of the season Monday. Leamington is now tied for first with Catholic Central and North Star at 4-1.

The loss was a second straight for Cardinal Carter as the Cougars fell to 2-3 on the season. They'll face Ste. Cecile Thursday. "I think we started a little rough but we did better in the second quarter." said Amelia Tar who is in her final year. "I'm just hoping to get a fun season and to get to know the junior girls a little better before I leave and just form a better bond with my teammates."
