Knights win opens door for Villanova

They are heated rivals on the local pitch but Holy Names did Villanova a solid Wednesday night although they had to sweat it out to do it. The Knights scored two goals in overtime to beat Ursuline College in Chatham 3-1 and punch their ticket to OFSAA, the right way.

"We definitely had a second gear going into the overtime," said head coach Stacey Ditchfield. "I told them, great players don’t get tired and they find a way to win and we did. The pressures we placed on them was suffocating and it worked in our favour because their field is smaller than what we are use to playing on and it took us a while to find our rhythm."

Anna Pozzi, Jane Pozzi and Alessia Fanella scored for the Knights who are hosting the provincial tournament starting June 6th. "We keep checking off the boxes," said Ditchfield whose team is the defending champs. "We were blessed we made it last year. I want the girls to have fun and embrace it.

Their victory allows Villanova, who the Knights beat in the WECSSAA final, to challenge UCC for an entry into the tournament. The Wildcats travel to Chatham Friday to take on the Lancers at 4pm.

"Great for the area. Great for local sports." Ditchfield said.
